Wetumpka Previews 2025 Season at River Region Media Day
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Wetumpka Indians' football team made an appearance at Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery on Tuesday for the River Region Sports Media Day.
Head Coach Bear Woods was accompanied by sophomore QB Charlie Skipper, senior ATH JD Denmark, senior OL Tyler Harris, and senior DL Ken Myles. The team spoke to local media from across the river region.
The team spoke about last season, summer practices, 7v7 tournaments and excitement about the 2025 season.
Much of the team's focus this season is on the motto "HEART"- representing Humility, Effort, Attitude, Reliability and Toughness.
Ken Myles praised the defense ahead of the upcoming season.
"Defense is gonna be there." Myles said. "Defense has always been there."
Myles also showed love to the young starting quarterback Charlie Skipper.
"Our offense has been getting a lot better. We have a Sophomore quarterback, and he's been rolling. He's been rolling ever since he got in."
Skipper mentioned reliability as a way to determine success for the 2025 season.
"Reliability. Being able to count on each other," Skipper said. "Accountability in the weight room, in practice, and taking every rep like it's a game."
As Coach Woods enters his fourth season as the head coach for the Indians. As a former linebacker at the Division I level and CFL, his focus remains on the defensive side of the ball.
"What's impressed is the defense." Woods said. "It's a bunch of guys who play fast and physical, and they want to continue to be a scoring defense at Wetumpka."
Despite having a program goal of getting past the first round of the playoffs, Woods is focused on the first game of the season against Bauregard.
"Being honest, we're talking about Beauregard, our first game of the year." Woods said. "The postseason, that's too far away to think about."
"Our goal is to win the Class 6A Region 2 title. However, it takes the daily goal of 'win the moment'. That's what we're preaching with the guys."
Wetumpka will begin its 2025 season on the road against Beauregard on Aug. 22, followed by the home opener against Chelsea on Aug. 29.
